Patterns come in all different sizes and shapes. I look at my pattern and I try to decide. You can put any pattern together and it comes out great.

Artist Bio

Janay Futch (b.1990) joined NIAD Art Center in 2016, and has consistently pushed the boundaries in printmaking, painting, and drawing. Often favoring experimental techniques, she’s incorporated a wide range of materials like shaving cream, silicone oil, and hand torches alongside pencil and ink. Many of the resulting works on paper are richly colored and feature combinations of gridded structures, dotted compositions, and personal symbols.

Janay describes the infinite possibilities of her process in a recent book of poetry: “Patterns can be fun to do. Patterns can be different styles of design. Patterns can be deep. Patterns can be overwhelming.”

Janay has exhibited around the Bay Area in group shows at the Eddie Rhodes Gallery in Contra Costa College and at the Oakland Museum of California. In 2024, her work was selected to represent NIAD in a showcase at ARTS CCC in the Contra Costa County Admin Building.
