PULLEY: A Virtual Satellite Exhibition

NIAD Virtual Gallery
PULLEY: A Virtual Satellite Exhibition

About the Exhibition

Alongside our collaborative exhibition PULLEY, now on view at the Berkeley Art Center through November 15, 2025, NIAD presents a group of works in that show's virtual orbit made during the same workshop with artist Chris Duncan.

About the Artists

Christian Vassell

Felicia Griffin

Peter Harris

with Christopher Robin Duncan

The duo of exhibitions, at Berkeley Art Center and here online, marks the culmination of a collaborative project two-plus years in the making between NIAD artists, staff, and artist Chris Duncan. The first-ever instance in which Duncan has shared his process with other artists. Encompassing deceptively simple elements—a pulley system to bring fabric to the roof, sun, moonlight, wind, and time—the process yields extraordinarily sun-bleached patterns on fabric. These fabrics were then stretched, and artists used them as canvases for their work.

As Elena Gross writes, "Far from privileging or prioritizing one artist’s singular hand or genius, PULLEY emphasizes the generative capacity of skillsharing, of radical experimentation, of creative fearlessness and building trust by building together."

2 programs accompany the event at Berkeley Art Center:

October 18 1-4pm: Community Potluck and artist talk with Shawn Sanders and Chris Duncan

November 15 3-5pm: Closing Reception and Book Launch*

*PULLEY will be accompanied by a limited edition book made in partnership with LAND AND SEA including quotes from NIAD artists, texts by Chris Duncan and Elena Gross, and documentation of the workshop at NIAD and exhibition at Berkeley Art Center.
