Artist Bio

Donzell Lewis (b. 1992) is a textile and fiber artist who has worked at NIAD Art Center since 2014.

He originally taught himself to knit by watching YouTube tutorials, and has since studied crochet, papier mâché, origami, macramé, and clothing construction. Using these techniques, Donzell has produced festive ornaments, toys, blankets, and wearables for people of all ages. These covetable items are presented year round in the Annex Gallery storefront. On his unwavering resolve to tackle increasingly complex designs, Donzell offers this mantra: “Do your knitting. That's the deal.”

Donzell’s knitted garments and accessories have been modeled in NIAD’s biennial Fashion Show, showcased at the OMCA, and published on the pages of Me and My Gal. Ramekon O’Arwisters, textile artist and founder of the social art practice Crochet Jam, selected Donzell Lewis’s work for Woven, Mixed, Tied, and Attached: Fiber As Message, a seminal exhibition in NIAD’s main gallery celebrating the enduring power of textile art.
