This month, we said goodbye to Mireya Betances, a sweet and glamorous soul who brought light and joy to everyone around her.
Mireya's large extended family was her entourage at every NIAD party she attended, and it was clear that she was a beloved daughter, sister, auntie, and cousin. Her presence always felt like a celebration of life.
She had a rare gift for making people feel truly seen, lifting spirits with her kindness and warmth. Her laughter was contagious, her energy unforgettable.
Mireya was an interdisciplinary artist who explored drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. She was also a musician, singer and performer. She loved working with clay, creating to music, and drawing inspiration from Luis Fonsi and Michael Jackson. Her work reflected her love for nature, self-expression, and the people around her, often capturing portraits and the beauty of butterflies, birds, and flowers.
As Mireya once said, “I like to dance in the garden and eat lunch with my friends.” Her spirit lives on in her art, her music, and the many lives she touched.
