Karla Alfaro has been working at NIAD for just over a year and she is a lifelong Richmond resident. Karla is a mixed media artist with a love for drawing. She works continuously on one piece at a time, building up layers of color with colored pencils, wax oils, crayons, pens, and oil pastels.
There are images that are repeated in her drawings: a small red house in the top left corner, trees, cherries, sometimes people. These images are surrounded by a dense cloud of greens, yellows, pinks, and oranges. Her drawings are thick with color when she’s done with them and for the most part, Karla likes to start and finish a single drawing in one day. Her drawings have an atmosphere to them; you can almost feel the air between the trees and the sunshine hitting the side of the red house.
