2025 marks the 120th anniversary of the City of Richmond, California, whose motto is the “City of Pride and Purpose.” This adage is rooted in the city’s history of shipyards, industrial plants, and Rosie the Riveter. As we honor that past, we also celebrate the city’s rich and vibrant present—one that acknowledges the City as a robust hub of art and culture.

Founded in 1982 in the heart of the Richmond arts corridor, NIAD Art Center provides a space that empowers artists to thrive. This exhibition highlights a group of artists who are not only NIAD artists, but who reside in Richmond as well.

Saul Alegria’s colorful animal portraits will brighten even the foggiest day; Evelyn Davis’ abstracted, elegant lines soar lyrically across the page; Janay Futch’s experimental patterns swirl as if in a dance; Christopher Jimenez-Lopez’s manga-inspired compositions are marked meticulously; and Jean McElvane’s figurative painting evokes nostalgia for eras prior.

At NIAD, pride is being a space in which dedicated artists—some of whom attend five days a week—make art that can be shared with all of the world. We are grateful for Mayor Eduardo Martinez, who understands the importance of art, thus adding richly to the legacy and pride of the city. As members of the Richmond community, with these NIAD artists, we look towards a radiant future—one that embraces artistic expression and creativity amongst industriousness, and continues to forge ahead globally.
