Marketing and Communications Specialist

Job purpose

Advise NIAD on communications and marketing strategy, with an eye to developing dynamic, accessibility-minded branding and outreach for the organization as a whole. Maintain and improve NIAD’s regular external communications; expand audiences for NIAD artists’ practices and artwork, and for NIAD’s mission as a progressive art studio and disability organization.

Duties and Responsibilities


Accessibility
- Develop NIAD-specific best practices in accessibility for social media, newsletters, donor communications, and events.
- Carry out NIAD accessibility policy and goals in all external facing marketing & communications. Keep abreast of updated standards to digital accessibility.

Marketing/Communications
Social media:
- Creatively and strategically execute social media marketing according to NIAD’s Annual Art Marketing Plan and 3-Year Strategic Plan:

  • Manage and grow NIAD’s social media presence.
  • Develop original content that centers NIAD artists’ voices and NIAD studio culture to drive regional and national visibility, engagement, and art sales.
  • Collaborate with NIAD’s studio artists and staff to develop new content threads featuring artists’ documentation, perspective, and voice.
  • Create a consistent and transparent image of NIAD on existing social media platforms while tracking and testing out new platforms.
  • Ensure consistent improvement in accessibility for audiences.


Content creation
- Develop engaging content for onsite and offsite exhibitions, programs, and artist spotlights that is aligned with NIAD’s Art Marketing Plan and Strategic Plan, to include articles, blog posts, videos, infographics, or additional formats.
- Optimize media posts for maximum impact on web and social media platforms considering SEO, format, and visual appeal.

Web & Email marketing & communications:
- Maintaining and developing NIAD’s website.
- Execute email marketing campaigns, crafting compelling messages for promoting
artists’ careers including:

  • Art sales.
  • Audience development for exhibition openings, and free and ticketed events.
  • Fund development and organizational support.

- Implement effective marketing strategies and optimize engagement through data segmentation, targeting, testing, and creation of best practices.
- Create design templates for NIAD’s digital and print presence across all platforms, and/or work with design contractors to develop assets for NIAD’s use.

Marketing Strategy:
- Collaborate with Exhibitions and Partnerships Director and Executive Director to create annual marketing & communications strategy and brand maintenance for NIAD Art Center and for Art Sales at NIAD, including periodic update of NIAD’s major brand assets such as website, organizational graphic design, and regular publications.
- Collaborate with NIAD’s Development Director on campaigns, fundraisers, and donor communications to align with NIAD’s Strategic Plan and Annual Development Plan.
- With Exhibitions and Partnerships Director and Executive Director, balance strategy, creativity, and data orientation to build a full-funnel digital marketing program and content to increase engagement, art sales, organizational reputation, and audience.

Partnerships
- Attend collaborative meetings with external partners.
- Co-develop communications strategies for NIAD partnerships.
- Provide ongoing marketing and communications support to NIAD’s partnership projects with other organizations and entities.


Special Projects
- Collaborate with Executive Director, Development Director, Studio Management, and Community Programs Director to support communications/PR for NIAD events.
- Provide Marketing and Communications support and expertise to NIAD’s Programs: Studio, Exhibitions, and Community; and NIAD’s Admin activities: Development, Volunteer Management, Finance/Planning, and Facilities/Operations.
- Liaise with graphic design contractors, and serve as project manager for key projects.


Teamwork and Collaboration
- Coordinate and collaborate with Art Marketing and Partnerships team members, including Exhibitions and Partnerships Director, Gallery Sales and Programs Manager, Artist Liaison, Registrar and Collections Manager, and volunteers and interns, including internal Studio Artist Interns.
- Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and coordinating work with Accessibility and Communications volunteers and interns.

Publicity and Public Relations
- In a timely fashion, produce press releases for exhibitions and events. Field inquiries from the media and coordinate interviews, tours, and access to assets.
- Seek out earned media for select major events and support driving attendance to NIAD exhibitions, fundraising events, and offsite programming.
- Serve as ambassador in Richmond and the broader Bay Area arts community to discuss NIAD’s programs and their successes.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- 3-5 years of experience in nonprofit marketing and communications; preferably with experience in marketing and communications for the arts.
- 1-3 years experience working with accessibility best practices in a professional setting.
- Experience in publicity, especially in social media platforms, and familiarity with art.

- Experience working with teams in the disability and/or arts sector is preferred.
- Experience in writing with a consistent and accessible voice.

- Knowledge of Shopify, Mailchimp, Monday.com, Canva, Photoshop, Digital Photography, Kapwing, Vimeo, YouTube, Flickr, Salesforce, Square and various social media platforms.

Working Conditions
This is a hybrid, full-time, salaried, exempt position with benefits.Salary range $69,000-73,000 dependent on experience.
Typical hours are 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with flexibility for evening and weekend events.

Collections Intern

Job purpose

NIAD’s Art Marketing Team seeks to provide a hands-on, educational experience for the Collections Intern who, over the course of one academic year, helps ensure smooth functioning of all aspects of inventory and collections care at NIAD. The internship is intended for local persons currently or recently enrolled in college level art, art history, or related humanities programs, and interested in a career in the arts. The Intern will work closely with the Registrar and Collections Manager, gaining relevant insight to the field.

Duties and Responsibilities

Inventory

Support the Art Marketing and Partnerships Team in maintaining records for inventory and art sales:

  • Assist in processing work for sale once it is received from the studio (i.e. ensure work is in good condition for sales, assign inventory numbers, and research titles/additional information).
  • Assist in physical handling of artworks, using best practice standards. 
  • Assist in photographing and cataloging works of art for inventory.
  • Assist in creating and filing hi-res jpegs of all current NIAD artworks.
  • Assist in sorting down recent art. 
  • Assist in deaccessioning artworks. 
  • Assist in packing and shipping artworks.
  • Assist in maintaining organization of artwork in storage spaces and flat files.
  • Assist with the moving of artworks between onsite and offsite storage sites. 

23rd Street Galleries

Support the Art Marketing Team in producing exhibitions at the Art Center:

  • Assist with creating exhibition checklists, price lists, and online collections.
  • Maintain wall surfaces at NIAD.
  • Assist in preparing backend of art receptions at the Art Center, supporting set-up and takedown before/after each event.
  • Occasional support for exhibitions at satellite venues. 
  • Support artist talks, events, and gallery hours for exhibitions in NIAD’s 23rd Street Galleries.

Art Sales

As a member of the Art Marketing and Partnerships Team, provide support for art sales:

  • Receive and assist gallery visitors as needed, process in-person sales, and track sales.
  • Provide inventory numbers and data on sales to Art Marketing Team to ensure inventory records are up to date.
  • Assist in entering art sales in database.
  • Assist in maintaining records of artists’ appearances in online, on-site, and off-site exhibitions.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently or recently enrolled in a college level art, art history, or related humanities program. 
  • Love and knowledge of contemporary art and artworld.
  • Experience and/or interest in working with disabled communities. 
  • Familiarity and/or willingness to learn digital software: examples include e-commerce platforms, image editing software, data entry and database maintenance, and point of sale applications.
  • Telephone and email etiquette; ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at once and willingness to reorganize priorities when necessary.
  • Experience and/or willingness to learn digital photography.
  • Spanish or another language is preferred but not required.
  • Driver’s license and transportation are preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to try new ideas and recognize when something is not working. 
  • Ability to meet deadlines both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including occasional weekend or evening hours in support of events. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.

Working Conditions

This is a 10-15 hour per week, paid internship with flexible hours, not to exceed 8 hours/day, according to departmental need. Scheduling to be determined upon hire. Hourly rate of $17.77/hour (or the current minimum wage for Richmond, CA), with an additional honorarium of $600 to be paid out at the beginning of each semester. Course credits can be arranged in lieu of payment. A background check and TB test current within 2 years are required. Recommended but not required: full COVID vaccination including booster shot(s).

Physical Requirements

Sitting at a desk; computer work; lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds); bending; climbing ladders; using technology equipment and tools. Ability to work in a hybrid professional and studio environment, where loud noise and interruptions are common.

Call for Visiting Artists

NIAD is seeking artists to share their practice, unique skills or preferred methods and materials in the form of a workshop during our studio hours, Monday through Friday, 10:00am-2:00pm.

Workshops typically exist as a 3-6 day engagement. 

We offer a stipend of $150/day

Please provide a proposal outlining your workshop idea.

For consideration, proposals must include:

  1. Why you are interested in engaging with NIAD’s community. 
  2. Material needs, including budget.
  3. Project timeline.
  4. Proposed dates.

Proposals may include: 

  • Link to personal website or images of relevant work and related projects.
  • Access needs, accommodations.
  • Workshops that are bilingual or include ASL or nonverbal communication.
