Joshua Sainz (b. 1995) is a Bay Area artist who joined NIAD Art Center in 2025. Sainz primarily works on canvas, and uses an impasto technique to build up his surfaces with thick layers of acrylic. Some of these topographies extend upward in ridges and hills; in other places, the paint is etched, shaped, or carved to evoke weathered tree bark and rough-hewn stone. His recent series of paintings teeters between figuration and abstraction: the scenes evoke hazy, dreamlike landscapes and intense emotions. Many works feature floating, luminous symbols – each described in a shimmering palette of metallic blues and golds.
Joshua Sainz’s paintings have been showcased during open studio events at NIAD in Richmond, CA.
