NIAD Holiday Gift Guide # 3 : "Merry and Bright" Selected by Lucy Zimmerman

a painting of two red hearts with faces, arranged side by side. Each is embroidered with red or yellow thread. The background is a field of brightly colored triangles that resembles stained glass.

About the Collection

As the sky becomes grayer, and the days shorter, I’m seeking out gifts that will infuse my loved ones’ homes with bright color, and sometimes even a bit of humor.

I chose vibrant ceramic works worthy of any mantle or bookshelf, like Dorian Reid’s interpretation of Dionne Warwick as a cat; one Sylvia Fragoso’s intimate yet enduring monuments to memory, faith, and family; Mike Star’s submarine; and a red hot slumping vessel by Felicia Griffin.

Reed Feshbach’s Untitled (D1513) features text such as “Little Richard’s Rubber Duckie” and “Reporter Kermit” amongst meticulous, colorful redactions.

The deadpan humor of Nathan Lam’s Role Reversal Potpourri: The Smoking Section is worthy of inclusion in the New York Times cartoons! These vibrant pieces start at $40, so there’s something for everyone on your list.
