After a long hiatus, NIAD's artist-designers are bursting at the seams with bold and boundary-pushing fiber and fashion creations. See it all in motion on the NIAD runway in the culminating event of "A Little Bit of Everything." The title says it all.
AUGUST 18 – SEPTEMBER 3 Sherrie Aradanas, Ricky Bearghost, Raven Harper, Gail Lewis, Elmeater Morton, Shantae Robinson Soft Material is a collaborative garment-construction project between artists who have an interest in and connection with fashion and textiles, as well as the corporeal, the body, and performativity. The program supports and connects artists living with disabilities whose communal studios were severely interrupted by the pandemic. The project is co-organized by NAN COLLYMORE and CELIA LESH with artists from NIAD, Creative Growth, Elbow Room, and the Center for Craft. "This collection presents tapestries woven in wool by me, Janet Moore, after those delightful paintings by NIAD artist Saul Alegria. Saul works at NIAD in the large, shared studio space. I worked there as an artist mentor and instructor in the textiles department. Saul’s renderings of animals delighted me. One of my first thoughts on seeing his work was that they would translate very well in tapestry as they were quite graphic in nature, showed his interest in text and language, had unique color combinations, and expressed a range of emotions that were quite surprising. I decided to ask Saul if he would like to see his paintings woven, and he said yes."
