// About the exhibition //
“The Japanese concept of ‘Ma’ refers to all aspects of our lives. It is the pause in a sentence, the space within the cup, the negative space found within an artwork. It allows us the chance to breathe and focus on that which is important.
Although described as the negative space, as in an area unpainted, or a gap in a 3D sculpture, this space is a hugely positive concept. It takes great skill and restraint for an artist to allow these pauses to occur within their work. To hold back from filling every inch of the canvas, to remove from, instead of add to.
This collection of works from the talented artists at NIAD spans canvas, paper, sculpture and textiles. Together they show a fundamental understanding of the concept of Ma, and a refreshing contemporary perspective of each individual artist.”
