NIAD Windows Exhibition: History in the Making organized by Raven Harper and Shawna Kinard //

About the exhibition In this exhibition, Shawna Kinard and Raven Harper are exploring their relationship to Black history through the lens of NIAD Studio Artists whose work they identify with. “Black women deserve to be heard. Often Black people don’t get to be heard and I wanted to show Black women because I know a lot about Black history. Black history is important to know about because it’s something you can teach your children about.” For Raven Harper, her curatorial direction followed the pathway of remembering. “People these days should recognize that our ancestors did it for us. I am currently working on my first rug with Maria Guzman Capron in NIAD’s fiber department. I like how NIAD encourages developing new skills and how I can work on long term projects. The NIAD studio facilitators are an integral part of my practice. Bill Zindel in the printmaking department has helped me develop my printmaking works and expand into making t-shirts and bags. I like to use different techniques Read More …

Shana Harper

I am a phenomenal artist who works primarily in printmaking, ceramics, textiles and drawing. In my drawings I like to work with holes or gaps, especially in my nature scenes. Sometimes that’s me, sometimes I’m in a hole trying to get out of it and a lot of my art is about my feelings. When I work in the studio I like to stay in one spot so I can focus. I like to draw variations of an image; a flower, a leaf. I like to repeat an image; that’s why stencils and printmaking interest me. I like to work an image Read More …
