The Workshops at NIAD

Spring 2013

We’re opening our studios to everyone for a quartet of one-day workshops lead by four of our very talented instructors. Interested in making art? Come by and we’ll teach you a thing or two.

NIAD Art Center supplies the materials, space and instructor; you supply the ideas and energy (and your lunch).  Our art instructors have loads of experience in their field, after all we’ve been doing this for nearly three decades.

Classes begin at 10:00 am in our studios at 551 23 Street in Richmond.

That’s right, all the materials are included.  But, seriously, bring your lunch or plan on visiting the taco truck across the street, we don’t supply food. The Workshops at NIAD are open to the whole family, from adolescents to adults.

Pet Portraits

Instructor: Lauren Ari

Date: Saturday May 18 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Everybody loves pets. We do, too. Bring in your favorite photograph of your dog or cat as inspiration for a painting or a ceramic plate. NIAD painting instructor Lauren Ari will help you put brush to canvas or clay– from noticing the details in your snapshot to translating it into a drawing or painting. This is class is fun for the whole family, why not bring your mom along to it as a Mother’s Day gift? Note: We love your kids, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. This workshop ends at 12:30pm, so do you don’t need a lunch.

Fee: $25 (includes materials) for painting on canvas, $30 (includes materials) for glazed 12″ ceramic platter (note: platter can be picked up after firing)

Painting on Silk

Instructor: Tomoko Murakami

Date: Sunday May 19 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

We all agree that painting on silk is beautiful. Tomoko Murakami, who leads our works on paper classes and teaches silk painting to our artists, will lead you down the road of this vibrant art form.  One of the most exciting parts of painting on silk is the opportunity to create strikingly vivid textures with color. In this introductory workshop, using basic silk painting techniques, participants will create a 14” Mandela. We promise you the results will be stunning!

Fee: $60 (includes materials)
