Metrius Englin is an amazing storyteller who creates artwork with a strong line and vivid color. Drawing has come naturally to her since she was a young child growing up in a series of foster homes. She began taking art seriously when she came to NIAD in 1995 at age 22.

Englin appropriates imagery and subject matter from television, movies, history, magazines, books, and draws from her own memory. She has produced striking paintings depicting gods of Egypt and of other African and South American nations. Englin is particularly adept at portraits, including several of young mothers holding infants and another appears to combine three heads on the same torso: an angry god, a man, and a jackal. Other paintings demonstrate Englin's considerable skills in representing light, shadow, and reflections on water. As a result, Englin is popular with NIAD collectors, has been exhibited widely, and has a promising career ahead of her.
