Maurice Stratford had already demonstrated a long-standing interest in art when he returned to NIAD in 2001 at the age of twenty-nine.

A quiet young man, Stratford worked steadily, primarily in the media of crayon pastels, watercolors, and colored pencils on paper. He began by creating brightly colored kaleidoscopic shapes in each of these media, gradually developing a style of covering the entire page in various colors of different, every day images.

Towards the end of his career at NIAD, Stratford created works in acrylic paint on canvas and found his inspiration from pictures in magazines which he would interpret in a more abstract manner using heavy amounts of paint with small, varied brush strokes.
