Marlon Mullen was described as a painter's painter.
His subject, regardless of form seemed to be the paint itself, which he took pleasure in mixing and applying. Mullen put his whole body
behind each brush stroke. At times, he seemed to be dancing to an inner rhythm.
Mullen's art is spacious and sparse in composition. His palette was broad,
but each work was usually restricted to a few contrasting colors. His images
are semi-abstract, often inspired from photographs and advertisements found
in magazines.
Mullen started at NIAD in 1986 at the age of 23. His work has been sold to
collectors and was shown in 1997 at the Intuit Gallery, Chicago, IL; in 1996 at the
Very Special Arts Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida; in numerous galleries across
the United States and Canada as part of NIAD's Creative Spirit exhibit; in the 2005 exhibit The Amazing World of NIAD Art Center at the Concourse
Gallery in San Francisco, CA: and most recently in 2007 for a solo show at the Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco, CA.
