Joseph "Dan" McIntyre was already 49 years old when he came to NIAD Art Center in 1986. In the ensuing years his work changed and strengthened due an increased level of focus and concentration regarding the infinite details and use of color in his work.

Since he began painting, printmaking, and drawing at NIAD, his work often depicted mosaic-like patterns of color that evolved in terms of precision and mastery. His later work resembled mazes or roadmaps to unknown destinations and sometimes he took hours crafting the smallest details.

McIntyre's work was exhibited in many shows at NIAD, as well as a number of outside exhibits: Art From the Heart at the Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco CA in 1997; Group shows at the Cal Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and the Westside Café in Berkeley in 1993; and the Very Special Arts Gallery in Washington, D.C. among many other venues.
