When Dorian Reid first came to NIAD Art Center in 2003, "Dorrie" had not only been living independently for fifteen years, she had already crocheted more than 500 brightly colored afghans, and had given them away to nursing homes in the Richmond area. Born in 1957 with a mild brain disorder, Reid has always demonstrated a passion for color and for creating art. Her joining the NIAD community while maintaining an independent living situation and a part-time job seems to have been a necessary next step.

Since coming to NIAD, Reid has exerted herself energetically and expanded her horizons from textile arts to working in pastels and paint, lately on oversized unstretched canvases. Her work is characterized by a softness of form, which gives it an abstract quality. Reid's sense of rich, deep color is pleasing to the eye.

Reid's art was recently on display in "Compelled to Create," an April 2005 exhibit at the Arts Benicia Gallery. Included in this show is Reid's first attempt at 3-dimensional art, a large wood and acrylic sculpture entitled, "Tsunami," in memory of the December 2004 tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia.
