David Martin first came to NIAD in 1999 when he was 56 years' old. His talent for representational drawing, particularly of human faces and figures in varied contexts, is impressive as well as fascinating.

Martin's work is characterized by a unique sense of both line and color. Martin's subjects express an array of emotions, whether rage, fear or sorrow, and this motif of emotional distress and expression is carried through by the strong, vivid colors of his palette. His drawings and paintings are often powerful images of famous people, both historical and fictional.

His work is fundamentally unique, but carries echoes of the work of Egon Schiele and some of the German expressionists, particularly in the unflinching directness of his subject matter.

Martin's art has recently been featured in 2007 at the ViewPoint Gallery in Schenectady, NY, for the "7th National Acquisitions Exhibition for Artists with Disabilities," and in the exhibition "Outsider Art: Survey 2008," at the HAI gallery in New York City.
